Some of our employees went to deliver all the presents we bought for the kids today and they were supposed to do a bit on it on the 4 o'clock news but we got cut because apparently it was much more important to spend the entire hour making us all afraid of the impending weather. I can't imagine it was supposed to be anything more than a 30 second blurb at the end, but even 30 seconds is precious in the media's battle to make us afraid of everything. I end up shaking my head sadly every time I watch the news now.
It's not so much the news being the problem- between the internet and the History/Science/Discovery channels, there are a lot of really frightened and misinformed people out there. And we're on the front lines.
Today, I've dealt with 10 calls, and I haven't been on the desk an hour.
Oh I see. You're the equivalent of a nurse/doctor dealing with people who have googled their symptoms. Yes, the internet has had an enormous impact in many areas because of the 'information at your fingertips' aspect of it. That is definitely one of the more negative effects.
I think we're more like first responders who haven't had more than basic first aid. :) This is not our usual line of country by a long chalk and we're all a little flaily and burnt out.
