My mom wanted a cocker because she'd had one as a little girl and also because she was tired of lifting big Belgian Sheepdogs and Australian Shepherds off the grooming table.
I love the term scratch and dent. We got a couple of those in the Belgian variety, including one who'd been dumped at an animal shelter in Anchorage because the dimwit owner hadn't been able to sell all the puppies she'd brought up from Texas. She'd bred two pet-quality dogs and when the puppies weren't showable, she first tried to sell them at a show in Anchorage with no success and then left them at the pound rather than take them home to Texas with her. Why she decided to bring them to Alaska in the first place, I don't know. Anyway, mom rescued all the pups and they found good homes.
